Gebhard Rainer, CEO of HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions), stands at the forefront of sustainable expedition travel, leading the company into an era of innovative and responsible exploration. With a career spanning over three decades in the luxury hospitality and travel sectors, Rainer brings a wealth of experience and a profound commitment to environmental stewardship to his role.

Before joining HX, Rainer held several high-profile positions that honed his expertise in operational quality, guest excellence and strategic growth.

His tenure as Group CEO of Sandals Resorts International was marked by significant advancements in luxury offerings and service standards. Prior to this role, he served more than 20 years at Hyatt Hotels Corporation in various capacities, including Director of Finance; Director of Finance Europe, Africa, Middle East; Vice President of Hotel Finance and Technology; Managing Director Europe, Africa, Middle East; Executive Vice President; and Chief Financial Officer successively. At Hyatt, he was instrumental in expanding the brand’s global footprint and enhancing its commitment to sustainability. From 2014 to 2016, he also served as President and Chief Operating Officer for the luxury brand Coach.

Rainer embarked on his journey with HX in July 2024, taking on the challenge of sustaining the company’s reputation as a leading expert in eco-conscious expeditions and responsible travel. In recent years, HX has not only expanded its unique expedition offerings but also reinforced its mission to protect the people and places at the heart of its journeys. Rainer's strategic vision supports the integration of cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices, ensuring that travellers can experience the wonders of the world without compromising their ecological integrity.

A passionate advocate for sustainable tourism, Rainer has implemented numerous initiatives aimed at reducing carbon footprints, supporting local communities, and promoting conservation efforts. Rainer's leadership style is characterised by his inclusive and collaborative approach. Educated in Austria, Gebhard Rainer holds a degree in Hotel and Tourism Management, which laid the foundation for his illustrious career. Fluent in multiple languages and well-versed in diverse cultures, Rainer embodies the global perspective necessary for leading an international expedition company.

Outside of his professional achievements, Rainer is a dedicated philanthropist and environmentalist. He supports a non-profit organisation, “OASIS Center International,” in California as their Chairman of the Board and was an active participant in environmental discussions in the Caribbean during his tenure as Group CEO of Sandals Resorts International. Rainer also sat on the Board of the Sandals Foundation; an organisation active in supporting sustainability projects throughout the Caribbean. He is an outdoor enthusiast and enjoys running and hiking, aside from cooking and collecting wines.
