MS Finnmarken
Hybrid-powered MS Finnmarken (formerly MS Otto Sverdrup) sails year-round on Signature voyages along the Norwegian coast, going from Hamburg in Germany to the North Cape and back.
About the ship
MS Finnmarken (previously MS Otto Sverdrup) is named after the wild and rugged Finnmark region in northern Norway where the remote North Cape lies.
The name Finnmarken has a proud history within Hurtigruten, with two former ships taking the same title. The first, DS Finnmarken, was a steamship built in 1912. This was replaced by the motorship, MS Finnmarken, in 1956. The former was a classic icon of elegant Norwegian sea travel, with carved wooden interior ornamentation. The latter is a showcase from the golden age of post-war coastal liners.
The present-day MS Finnmarken – which sailed under the name MS Otto Sverdrup between 2021 and 2025 – was constructed in 2002 and underwent renovation in 2020. Natural Scandinavian materials like granite, oak, birch and wool were used in the refurb to create a relaxed and stylish atmosphere that adds to the premium feel while on board.
To bring the ship right up to date, a 2025 upgrade has seen the pool deck refined, as well as other technical improvements implemented.
This comfortable ship offers the chance to indulge yourself in the wellness area, complete with gym, treatment rooms and sauna. You can enjoy a heated swimming pool and hot tubs on Deck 7, while outdoor observation areas are located on the two middle and uppermost decks.
MS Finnmarken is a hybrid-powered ship with battery packs that enable greater fuel efficiency and lower NOx and CO2 emissions. It is also equipped for shore power connectivity, which cuts emissions when docked in ports where shore power is available.
On many of our voyages, you can visit and board DS Finnmarken and the first MS Finnmarken at the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes. Having been found and ‘rescued’ from a field in the Netherlands, only some interior sections of DS Finnmarken have survived, while MS Finnmarken has been fully restored to her former grandeur.

Frequently asked questions
These are the most common questions about the facilities and services on board our ships. There’s more info in our Help Center.
MS Otto Sverdrup entered routine dry dock on 11 April and will return as MS Finnmarken on 16 May.
Originally launched as MS Finnmarken in 2002, the ship was named after Norway’s northernmost county. This follows two earlier vessels with the same name, dating back to 1912 and reflecting a proud heritage. In 2021, the ship was then renamed MS Otto Sverdrup when she sailed as an expedition ship for Hurtigruten Expeditions (HX).
When the ship returned to our fleet, it was natural to revert to her original Finnmarken name to reflect both the vessel’s legacy and Hurtigruten’s naming traditions.
No, the renaming will have no impact on your booking. The only change will be the ship’s name.
