European Cities Hurtigruten has visited.

Funchal, the capital of Madeira

Explore Funchal, the capital of Madeira, a lovely city located in a unique area; the natural geological features form an "amphitheatre" surrounding the city, which rises almost 1200 metres high on gentle slopes. This provides a natural shelter and was what attracted the first settlers in 1421.

Madeira has many fabulous botanical gardens, but the best way of all for visitors to enjoy the overflowing flora of the island in springtime is to join the excursions and enjoy the hilly countryside that rises to tremendous volcanic peaks.

Las Palmas

Founded in 1478, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria boasts an important historical and cultural heritage, much of which can be found in the district of Vegueta, the oldest quarter of the town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.

Today Las Palmas is a bustling city overflowing with Spanish ambiance, history and culture. It has a large infrastructure of hotels and apartments and its harbour Puerto de La Luz is one of the most important ones in Europe, giving the city a very cosmopolitan flair.

Lisbon

We recommend that you acquaint yourself with the beautiful capital of Portugal.

Portimão

Portimão is a popular holiday resort on the Algarve coast. The weather is amongst the best in Europe and offers around 300 days of sunshine each year.

Portimão is a commercially oriented town with 35,000 inhabitants, and its location in a natural harbour at the mouth of the River Arade means that it has been associated with many famous smugglers and pirates in the past.

Visit Lagos, one of the most interesting towns on the Algarve. Inhabited in turn by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Moors, Lagos later became the launching point for Henry the Navigator's caravels of discovery to Africa; it was also the site of the first slave market in Europe in 1444.

Seville

Seville is the heart of Andalucía and the historic, cultural and financial capital of southern Spain.

Seville's history stretches back more than two thousand years and has created a city with a distinct personality and a well preserved historical centre. Visit the gothic Cathedral from medieval Spain, the Giralda (Bell Tower) and Alcázar (Royal Palace) with Moorish influence and explore the narrow alleys of the old Jewish quarter of Santa Cruz.

Holy Week (Semana Santa) in Seville allows the visitor a precious glimpse into the very soul of Spain. Thousands of people visit the ancient city's winding streets to remember the events of The Passion. The combination of the heady clouds of incense and flamenco song, along with the sheer spectacle of the parades, serves to create a powerful atmosphere.

St Petersburg

Catherine Palace Catherine Palace

Though the name has changed several times throughout history, the charm and beauty of this city situated on the river Neva has remained. Gracing the shores of the Baltic, St. Petersburg is a living monument to its founder, Peter the Great.

Among the more than 1,000 architectural and historical monuments is the former imperial palace – The Hermitage – which houses the great treasures of the Czars and is one of the world’s largest art museums.

Culture has always flourished in St. Petersburg due to the influences of Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Pavlova, Nijinsky and Fabergé. Outside the city you may visit Peterhof palace and gardens (Petrodvorets), built by Peter the Great to resemble French Versailles. Several excursions will enable you to make the most of your time here.
